Founded in 1836 by General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo of Mexico, and further populated during the gold rush of 1849, Petaluma is one of the oldest cities in California. Petaluma sits at the southern end of the County, conveniently located only 32 miles north of San Francisco. Downtown Petaluma is one of the most well-preserved, historic areas in western America. Petaluma real estate includes a number of Victorian homes and distinguished pre-1906 buildings. With an old classic look, Petaluma has been a favorite location for several movies set in the mid-20th century. Today, wineries, restaurants, and shops inhabit the historical buildings of downtown Petaluma.

Petaluma offers a taste of small-town America at the turn of the century. historical buildings line the streets of downtown and are home to some of the best restaurants in town. Recently gaining the attention of bay area foodies, Petaluma’s a firm believer in the slow-food movement. The local eateries source food the many local organic farms, ranches and dairy’s in the area and participate in the several epicurean themed festivals.

Today, Petaluma gives off a rustic impression, but those farms have given way to vineyards, shops, Bed & Breakfasts, and increasingly, housing developments for residents who appreciate the access to relatively affordable homes and the straight shot to San Francisco 35 miles south on CA 101.
